Will my stimulis check be garnished for student loans for the Dept of Education?
Nov 17, 2008 Student Dept
I got the letter telling me when it is supposed to arrive and how much I am getting, but can they still garnish it after it is sent? Or after the letter is sent?
If they are in default, yes, the same rules apply as to your regular tax return.

I think the letter would state that the rebate was taken for the student loan.

I read it somewhere when they first announced the stimulus checks.

IRS is required to send you the letter advising you how much you qualify for, and yes it gives you a date your rebate is scheduled to be sent, but the rebate will be offset to your student loan and you will not receive the payment. IRS will later send you a notice telling you your rebate was offset.

if the student loan is in default , you bet they are going to take the check as they should ,
